All living creatures have consciousness, excluding plants and living creatures immobile, but perhaps they too have consciousness of some kind. The point is that if you are mobile, you constantly have to make decisions, and this takes consciousness. Humans can self reflect and we assume that only we can do this, but who really knows? We know so little compared to what is knowable, that we might really consider ourselves as mostly unconscious with a smidgen of consciousness which we use to navigate our lives.
And if you believe scientists, they say that bacteria was the first life form and now it is the most prolific life form billions of years later and that they make up the majority of cells in our bodies. Is it possible that bacteria are highly underrated? It is possible that it is they who have created us as we make for them such a comfortable home. Maybe they have created all life? It's possible, but then you will ask who created the bacteria? It always goes back to the unknown that we call God. Which to me, seems highly unlikely, though I am not saying that it isn't quite easy to believe that something had to create creation. But then you get back to how did God come about or begin? So, we end up getting nowhere. Which could be said about us after we shed this mortal coil, "we end up getting nowhere". The microbes eat us until we are gone. My intuition tells me that it could be true, that microbes have created all the variants that make up life and that humans are the Frankenstein of bacteria. The Dodo bird couldn't fly, but its not fair to assume that the bird was too stupid to know how to fly. But you could say that humans were/are too stupid to prevent their self-imposed extinction. But that too might be unfair, because it is not about stupidity, it's about not being able to self organize in an effective, ethical, and ecological way. So many species have died and continue to go extinct thanks to our naughty ways, with wars, and pollution, etc. And now we must put ourselves on the endangered species list. Its the yin-yang uroboros biting its own tail syndrome. It's a vicious infinity symbol that we are caught in. The bacteria will survive, but will have to create creatures that can withstand intense heat and begin again under much more difficult circumstances to produce all the creatures that eventually "evolve" into human. Perhaps its nothing for bacteria, as their grasp of time is with a much larger perspective embracing billions of years.
